Symphony No. 4 was composed during the summer of 1914 and dedicated to William C. Carl, an American organist. It was published in 1917 by Henry Lemoine and premiered by Francis Snow in Boston in that same year. The first performance in France was only in January 1923, by André Marchal, in the presence of the composer at the Conservatoire in Paris.

The OrganScore edition is made from the original edition (Louis Vierne, Symphonie No. 4 pour Grand Orgue, Editions Henry Lemoine, 1917), on which a number of corrections were necessary. Most corrections have been identified by various pupils and friends of Vierne, and compiled by Rollin Smith (Louis Vierne, Organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Pendragon Press, Hillsdale, N.Y., 1999).
